Fibroids Q & A

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are masses of muscle tissue that grow inside the uterus. They can range in size and shape from very small to as large as a melon. The precise underlying cause of uterine fibroids is unknown, but studies indicate hormone fluctuations may play a major role, as well as family history of the growths. Fibroids are more likely to grow during a woman's childbearing years with growth typically stopping once menopause is reached. Although women with fibroids can become pregnant and carry a baby to term, they need to be monitored to ensure the fibroids don't grow and cause problems with the developing baby.

Are uterine fibroids cancerous?

No; in fact, almost all fibroids are benign (non-cancerous).

What are the symptoms of uterine fibroids?

The most common symptoms associated with uterine fibroids include:

  • irregular menstrual bleeding, including spotting and bleeding between periods and heavy bleeding during periods

  • sensations of pressure in the pelvic region

  • very painful periods

  • painful intercourse

  • urinary incontinence

  • frequent urge to urinate

How are fibroids treated?

Some fibroids cause no symptoms at all, and women may not even know they have them. When they do cause problems, there are several techniques that can be used to treat them, including:

  • uterine artery embolization, a procedure that cuts off blood flow to the fibroids

  • ablation

  • hormone therapy

When lab work or ultrasounds are required prior to treatment, both can be completed right in Dr. Naim's office.

Once my fibroids are treated, can they come back?

Yes, sometimes new fibroids can develop after treatment, especially in women with undiagnosed hormone issues and women with a family history of fibroids. Dr. Naim will be able to discuss your risk factors for recurrence during your evaluation.
